Newark Conservative Club Newsletter

AUGUST 2020

Dear Members,

I can’t believe that the Club has been open for over a month now. Such a lot going on!

It gives me great pleasure to introduce a new Member of the Committee – Mr Alan Card. Alan is a retired RAF Police Officer .He carries out a lot of voluntary work and is willing to commit some of his time to the Club. The Committee are looking forward to working with him. He has become a co-opted Committee member until the AGM when you, the Members, will have a chance to vote on the matter. If you feel you have the energy, enthusiasm and some time to spare plus new ideas you want to share, why not join the Committee? We are a friendly bunch of people with a common goal – to ensure that the Club goes from strength to strength. Please talk to any Member of the Committee to find out more about becoming a Committee Member.

The Committee, Miles and Andrea have been working extremely hard to keep the wheels turning and above all to keep everyone safe when they visit the Club. The Covid 19 Risk Assessment is reviewed on a regular basis to ensure it “fits the bill”.  I want to thank Members and their guests for adhering to the new rules with good humour. We can’t do it without your co-operation. Currently Newark is experiencing a “spike” and vigilance is required to prevent a local lockdown. This is the last thing we want to happen at the Club.

So please remember:

Do not enter the Club if you are experiencing any of the symptoms of Covid-19

Keep 2 metres apart, wherever possible, from Members who are not from your household.

Sit and socialise in a group of no more than six from no more than two households.

We value your health and your custom – I know these are difficult rules to follow when you come out to socialise but we have to protect ourselves and others.  Your support has been amazing – thank you – it’s great to see you all returning and I hope you will spread the word and give other Members the confidence to return.

Whilst the weather is warmer, albeit rather wet at the time of writing, Miles intended to continue using the Marquee. The more observant amongst will have noticed that it has now disappeared. The high winds we experienced on the 21st of August finished it off!  However – don’t forget that, if the weather is good you can still order meals, including weekday lunches and Sunday dinner, to eat outside and these will be brought to your table. Take Aways are also still available.  Miles mobile number to order these is: 07738 628668 or you can ring the Club on 01636 702113 if you would prefer.

Sunday Lunch bookings are going from strength to strength. Miles is introducing more items onto the menu – for example lamb shanks, home- made steak pie or salmon with new potatoes are now available. It really is worth a try and remains very good value for money at £6.95 per person.

On the 23rd August it was Harry Wade’s 93rd birthday.

Harry is a Life Member and he and his wife celebrated with Sunday lunch at the Club.

I am sure you would all like to send your best wishes to them both. Many happy returns Harry!

A few Members gathered on the 1st August in the Alexander Lounge to watch the FA Cup Final on the new television. Miles provided us with bacon, sausage or egg baps and a side of chips.  Delicious!

Bingo was the order of the day on Saturday 8th August ably called by Dot Town and assisted by Tony Lawson. It was a full house in more ways than one!  We all had a fun evening and enjoyed a “buffet in a basket”. Thanks to Miles.

The next event was held on Saturday 22nd August – a Fish and Chip Supper for £5.00. Food was served from 6.00 pm – 8.00 pm and over 45 people enjoyed the evening.

Apart from the day to day business Miles has been occupied planning for Christmas. (Apologies to those of you who do not like this word mentioned until at least December

1st). He has a number of events planned to keep you entertained throughout December.

Ladies and Gents – dress to impress for the Casino Night on Saturday 12th December, there will be a prize for the best-dressed individual. £15.00 per person will buy you the chips you need at the tables and a luxury buffet plus a glass of Prosecco.

Christmas Eve – entertainment

Christmas Day  – All of this will be building up to the main event – Christmas Day Lunch – a five course menu served at the table for only £49.95 per person. Pre-booking with payment is essential. We hope you will come and give it a try. The menu will be available soon.

New Year’s Eve  – after a two course meal provided by Miles, we will be entertained by Pete Brogan Junior who will sing us into 2021. Tickets will be £25.00 each and entry will be by ticket only.

Tickets will be available shortly for all these December events

Look out for the December Calendar of events soon to be published.

by James Courtney, with a buffet. Entry by ticket only.

There are quite a few projects going on at the Club currently. Your Committee plus volunteers have been busy and spent a couple of mornings tidying up the garden and car park. Thanks to Andrea, Martyn and Gaye Rollitt and Kath Lawson. We hope you notice the difference. This, of course, is ongoing – any volunteers who wish to lend a hand should speak to me or any other Committee Member to find out when it is happening.

When you visit the Club you may notice a friendly electrician or two on the premises. We are having some essential remedial work carried out. Hopefully this will be completed before too long and will cause as little disruption as possible.

One of the Committee’s many priorities is communication with Members. You will all be aware that we have recently had a problem with emails. We are trying to rectify this and Helen, our Treasurer has been setting up a brand new email system for us that will enable us to send out a high number of emails without getting “blocked”. The first email was sent advertising the Fish and Chip Supper on the 22nd August and that was a sell out. Well done and thank you to Helen. Great work.
