Dear Members,

WELCOME BACK!

On the evening of Monday 17th May I am pleased to report the doors of the Club opened once again. Quite a few of you ventured forth for a drink, a chat or a game of snooker and it was lovely to see you all. During the first week since re-opening I have tried to talk to as many of you as I could, if I missed you, please accept my apologies.

If you were among the fifty or so Members who attended the Re-opening Buffet evening on the 22nd May I hope you enjoyed yourselves. Everyone seemed to be happy to be able to meet up again and I hope you enjoyed the free food. Thank you, Miles, Andrea and the team – I want to call them the three Musketeers! – Seb, Matt and Noah.  Good to see you all back behind (or even in front of) the Bar. Olivia was absent on Saturday because she was working towards her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award in a very wet Derbyshire. However, she worked really hard on the Wednesday night of that week when the Early Bird Special proved to be very popular. Jodie has also worked a shift with Nikki putting in an appearance on Sunday evening

Thank you all once again for your support during the lockdown and now, as we try to build the business.

Newark Conservative Club Bowls Section

May has been a quiet month for the Bowls Section. The weather has not helped with cancellations of league matches. We did however get one league match played against Balderton but lost 3-1. We were unlucky there as we played with 11 ladies and gentlemen against 12. One of our players wives had been taken seriously ill and was ambulanced to hospital that afternoon. She is still in hospital as I write. Brian Jessop, please pass the Conservative Club love to her. That rink, two against three, lost 51-10.

We have been lucky with our Tuesday coffee and bowling morning league. The weather has been okay every week. The 54321 league has been on for the last 4 weeks and the leader board reads as follows. In first place our Steward, Miles Murphy, is in the lead with 190 shots, 2nd place is Roy Williams on 164, third is James Burton on 139, fourth is David Rudkin 128 and fifth is Richard Towning on 101.

New bowlers are always welcome so if any members of the Cons Club would like to have a go, please come along on a Tuesday morning, 10am and have a social morning. Bowls are available but you do need flat shoes. Finally, we had a very important visitor to the green last week. The Air Ambulance. An accident on Portland Street. Photo is below and on the Bowls Section notice board.

Tony Parker, Bowls Section Chairman

Darts – I am reliably informed that we now have an “oche” Hope that’s how you spell it! So, bring your darts along and have a game in the Snooker Room.

Dominoes – regrettably this activity will remain on hold until the covid rules allow

Ladies Night Update.

It is certainly a long time since we were all together, but I am hoping it will not be too long before we can commence our evening meetings and possibly look forward to a Christmas Dinner together.

After an initial discussion the Committee have decided that we will not commence formally until September. This will give us the first meeting just to have a social evening, possibly with a quiz. If things permit, I would try and obtain a speaker for October and November, with a view to having our usual Christmas Dinner in December. I am sure you will appreciate that I do not want to book speakers at the moment in case I should have to cancel them at short notice as I do not think this would be fair to them for their schedules.

It has been a long time, but I hope you will continue to support the Group. If there are any ladies who wish to join, please send your name and email address to me dianeplumb@btinternet.com and I will add you to the distribution list. We hope to have an interesting programme in 2021/22 and you will be very welcome.

Hope to see you all again soon.

Diane, Secretary.

Three reminders

Price reduction on all drinks: The offer on drinks finished on 31st May 2021

Membership fees: The cut-off date for renewal of Membership was 31st May 2021. Membership renewal is now closed. However, if you should change your mind about membership, you should contact Tony Lawson. Membership fees are £50 for the first year of membership. You will be very welcome to join, don’t miss out on upcoming events.

Affiliation Cards: Now that Summer is on its way and hopefully, we will be able to travel about, I thought it would be timely to remind you about the above. These are available and can be purchased from Tony at £2.00 each. They will entitle you to visit any other Conservative Club in the UK and enjoy the benefits and rights as Members of that Club but, I am afraid you will not be able to attend that Club’s AGM or have any voting rights associated with Membership of that Club.

Welcome back to George Townrow who is now returning on flexible furlough.

Goodbyes

Jo Allam, our cleaner, has resigned. She, together with Sheila her Mum, has always kept the Club spick and span. We will miss her, although most of you probably will never have met her because she worked early in the morning and usually was gone before we opened.

I am very sorry to report that Andrea Bell, our Cook, has decided that she, also, will not be returning. Andrea has worked in our kitchen for many years both at lunch times and for entertainment evenings. We are sorry to lose them both. I am sure you will join with me in wishing them well in whatever they do next.

Welcome  a very warm welcome to new Members  June Baker and  Gwyneth Jeyes.

As you are aware the Committee has a vacancy. If anyone feels that they have something to give to their Club in this way please let me know. We are a friendly group, and meetings are lively. All you need is a commitment to the Club, some free time and some ideas to enhance the product we offer to Members.  Interested? Please do not hesitate to have a chat with me or Tony or any other Member of the Committee. Now is the time with the AGM imminent.

Talking of which……the Committee has scheduled the 2020 and 2021 AGM’s for the evening of Tuesday 27th July ( covid restrictions allowing) . So, put that date in your diary. More information to come.
